Keds were the "original sneaker" – a name adopted because of the flexibility, rubber sole that allowed you to "drag" behind without someone noticing. The brand originated in 1916 and was produced by a company known as U.S. Rubber (now Uniroyal). Originally, the company wanted to call the shoes "Pedestrians," the Latin word for foot. But the name was already taken and if the "P" was replaced by a "K" and a brand new giant is born.

With their canvas tops and rubber soles, Keds were everywhere. They were used for both sport and elegant sportswear. They were particularly popular in the mid 1980 to mid 1990 when they were charged with "slouch socks" or leggings and were very popular among teenage idols. But the sneakers were worn by people of all ages, perhaps including Grandma Gatewood walking the entire 2.168 mile Appalachian Trail on Keds in 1955.

In 1949 a new line of Keds specially designed for athletics has been released under the new name "Pro-Keds. These sneakers were intended particularly for basketball and were worn by some of the biggest stars in basketball and team at the time. Finally, these Pro-Keds play a major role in the nascent hip New York hop community. Styles such as the Royal Canvas, the king's court and Royal Master is still in demand today.

Today you can buy Keds in several different styles and colors. The company produces ballerinas, Mary Janes, skimmers, slip-on Keds, sandals, mules and wedges, and more sneakers. Keds is a very popular brand for kids (perhaps because moms can throw them in the wash …?) and come in a range of sizes and styles for infants and toddlers.
