Hawaii Ballet

It was a rainy Saturday morning, when I finished unpacking from a recent business trip. After jiggling open the sliding door my wardrobe, I desperately tried to find space for a new pair of shoes that I bought.

No luck. Each When I moved an old dusty box, another fell.

"That's it!" I huffed out loud. "It the day I give all my old shoes. "

The shoes that I speak not only eroded – many of them are more appropriate. Why did I save? I got my ladder and up into regions of Staff Country land I went.

The first box contained a pair of black satin heels. They were my favorites, eight years ago when they were new. I remember to wear night I attended a big show of Swan Lake by the Joffrey Ballet. My friends and I were able to go backstage and meet the dancers.

The next box the silver held in mesh heels with beaded flowers delicately draped in the front that I am inclined to our bar mitzvah youngest son, 12 years ago. As I closed my eyes I could still hear his 13-year-old voice changing songs.

Less glamorous were my training shoes, all in tatters, but remembering the exuberant aerobics classes at the gym. Each pair of shoes was like an old photo album showing images of bright moments.

Five years ago when I moved from Los Angeles to Kauai, Hawaii, I did all my shoes, knowing full well that many do not fit over (my feet seem to widen with age). At the time, I not know why I took them, but sat on the edge of my bed, holding my shoes in satin black, I knew I would not let go the memories of parties, weddings, holidays, birthdays.

I wear these shoes during some of the best years of my life. They were with me when, against all odds, I went back to school, earned a doctorate, wrote books and built a private practice as a marriage and family counselor the child. It was not only the achievements that were important. It has all the wonderful people who enriched each experiment. Taking shoes, I tried to keep the memories. While moving to Kauai is an objective that my husband and I worked hard to achieve, it seemed that I was still connected spiritually to my 27 years in Los Angeles.

I took time to carefully dust off each pair of shoes and put them in a white plastic bag giveaway beside me. After putting the last pair in, I twisted tie wire around the top and reflected on the importance of creating a space in my life.

I realized that aside this who no longer afford to experiment – and shoes – which correspond to the person I became. Now my dressing room for new shoes Travel with me on the way forward.
